Incredible India

In light of what's going on in Mumbai at the moment, I thought I'd post some more peaceful images of India, taken when I visited this incredible country several years ago. I hope that peace will be restored soon.

The Slap

When a man slaps someone else’s child at a friend’s barbecue, the small universe in the backyard begins to unravel. Not only are friends and family divided by the event, but it brings to the surface all the murk from below. The Slap is that rare and mesmerising combination of master storytelling and brilliant characterisation.

In Turkey I am Beautiful

I just bought this book to read during my upcoming travels to Turkey, as I wanted to gain an insight into the Turkish people and culture. I look forward to having the time to read it!

The interesting thoughts of Edward Monkton

I've been alternatively giggling and marveling at the incisive thoughts of comic artist Edward Monkton, which are packaged up so appealingly in little books such as 'The Lady who was Beautiful Inside'.

The Other Hand

Set in war-torn Nigeria, this book by Chris Cleave leaves an indelible impression on you. Written from the different perspectives of the central characters, it emphasises how we all perceive things differently.

Tord Gustavsen Trio

This immensely talented group of musicians has provided the soundtrack to some of my most inspiring moments. I am enchanted by this album, which is currently on repeat play in my cd player...

The Divided Heart

As I get closer to having children, one of the issues that concerns me is the battle between creative practice and motherhood. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who struggles with it - The Divided Heart is a collection of musings on this subject by recognised Australian artists and musicians, who also happen to be mothers.

Fresh Milk

The wonderful folk from Milk Photos have put out a call for images to include in their new publication, Fresh Milk. I've sent mine in, fingers crossed!

Jorn Utzon

The amazing architect of the Sydney Opera House, Jorn Utzon, died recently at the ripe old age of 90. What a lasting legacy he has left on the city of Sydney, even though he was from the opposite end of the earth.

Andreas Gursky

The world's most collectible art photographer currently has an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Can't wait to see it.

Karen Magazine

Although it's been around for a long while, I just discovered this magazine from New Zealand. Its gorgeous production highlights the amazing talents of that little island nation across the sea from me

Maroc

Morocco is a visual feast in itself, but this book by Albert Watson captures the beauty of the country and its people with a unique vision

Head over Heel

Living with a native of Puglia, I laughed out loud at Chris Harrison's incisive commentary on the idiosyncrasies of people from the 'heel of the boot'. Endlessly enjoyable.

Africa

Herb Ritts took his love of the human form into another dimension when he shot this book in Africa. Simply stunning.

Renowned fashion photographer Jez Smith worked with the Sydney Dance Company recently, and I adore the results

African Visions

Having spent some time in Africa myself, and falling in love with it, I was thrilled to discover this book by Mirella Ricciardi, a French-Italian photographer who grew up in Africa, and recorded her life there through her lens. Beautiful photos, inspiring words.

Move

Although it was released several years ago, I still draw inspiration from this book by photographer James Houston. It's more stripped back and earthy than some of his other work, which is probably why I like it even more

The Promise

One of many books I've read about the heart's battle between love and the pull of the place where you come from - this book by Lisa Clifford proves once again that love always wins in the end

Aphrodite

Probably one of her less well-known books, Aphrodite is my favourite book by one of my favourite authors - Isabel Allende. All about the relationship between sensuality and food, this is hedonism at its best
