I heart Tuscany

These are some shots that an amazing Italian woman, Moria, took of me in Tuscany. They take me back to a special time in my life, when I felt completely free and alive.

Architecture in the blood

I grew up with a passionate architect father, and therefore an inherent love of architecture. I went on to complete a degree in interior design, but later discovered that I preferred to shoot buildings rather than design them. Wherever I go, interesting buildings call out to me to be photographed.

Steps

I recently rediscovered this image I shot of Compagnie Apostomis at the European Dance Biennale in Lyon. It remains one of my favourite images for its dark, dreamlike quality.

Stefania

A few years ago at Tuscany Photographic Workshop, I shot a model called Stefania, who has a beautiful cherub-like face, and always manages to create a different mood for the camera...

Breezy Brazil

One of the things I loved most about Brazil was its richness of colour. The Australian design tendency is towards earthy, neutral tones, as if we're afraid of making too much of a statement with colour. These images were shot in Bahia, and scream of the energy to be found in Brazil.

Plums in the Mouth

This is an image I created for Brascoe Publishing (www.brascoebooks.com.au) as part of a postcard series to promote their book of short stories; this one is called Plums in the Mouth, and is about the questionable authenticity of high culture. Thanks to Romi for her fabulous ever-changing expressions.

Innocence

Children are one of my favourite subjects, as their reactions to the camera are so uninhibited. And as much as I love taking photos of children, I'd love to be able to see the world through the eyes of a child again.

Emotion - colour v. black & white

"My passion has never been for photography in itself, but for the possibility - through forgetting yourself - of recording in a fraction of a second the emotion of the subject..." Cartier-Bresson, The Mind's Eye
This is a passion that I share with Cartier-Bresson, and I feel that these shots I took in Paris recently express two very different emotions, enhanced by the use of colour and black & white.

Colourful characters

Along my travels in Puglia, I had the pleasure of meeting some very colourful characters, who embodied the passionate spirit of the region. Allow me to introduce a few of them to you...
1.Giuseppe Tangaro, a famous artist from Andria who's still painting prolifically in his old age
2.Signor Longo, wine producer and musician who invited us into his country home
3.Mussel man, who insisted that we sample the freshness of his recent catch in Bari market
4.Gianni Ciardo, a famous comedian who we chatted to after his show in Polignano a Mare
5.Antique dealer in Barletta, who serenaded me with a song from the days of old
